Right from the get go, this songs blazing sirens and electro synths get you pumped. Boys Noize hails from Germany and will also be playing here at Ultra this week. I have never seen him live but he has been remixing everyones songs and his music has such an intensity. This song may be a bit much for my normal readers. What do you think of this guy? feel free to comment below.
I can not even believe how close Ultra is. Only 2 days away! In the spirit of this almost holy event, the next few posts will showcase some of the upcoming talent. Meet Simian Mobile Disco. Some of you may know their song from Fifa 08 and in case youre wondering, yes, this is the same Simian who produced “We are Your Friends” by Justice. This group is more pop like, and not so much electro as them however. The songs are light hearted and you’ll be singing the hooks asap. Will be a dope set this weekend I know.
Wale and Lady Gaga on a track together. Never saw this one coming. Sampling Steam’s 1969 song “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye”, the Cool & Dre-produced track will reportedly appear as the lead single off Wale’s debut studio album “Attention: Deficit”.
These two LA locals have killed that Girl Talk mashup sounds. Attached is “Kisses and Thugs” for your listening pleasure. To Download the whole mixtape free, go to www.lazerwolf.com/
Whats it like being a white rapper in the post-Eminem era? Ask Macklemore, whose flow is more reminiscent of a Common or Talib. He raps on “White Privilege” about how is the rap culture not his because he didnt grow up in Brooklyn selling drugs, holding guns, and beacuse he attended college? This beat is sick and the content is wickedly funny and often brutally honest.
As the 16 days leading up to Ultra seem like its taking forever, I decided to make the “Ultra” Ultra Playlist. For those of you joining me in Miami, you are brilliant. For those of you not, I implore you to reconsider. Included in this mix are the top songs from Tiesto, Axwell, Bob Sinclair, David Guetta, Fedde le Grand, Cut Copy, Simian Mobile Disco, DeadMau5, Dirty South, Moby, Bloc Party, and the Prodigy. All must haves for any house, electro fan. Period. Who is joining me in Miami next week?
Two of the illest songs I’ve heard lately are posted below. Fuck this review if you want. Just give them a listen. If you’re still reading this, know Mike Posner and The Brain Trust were signed to Kanye’s G.O.O.D music, the same label as Kid Cudi and Common. Only this is something like you’ve never heard before. This white guy brings a whole new sound over Kanyes spectacular use of organ pianos over synths over violins. Both songs are worth a serious listen the whole way through because once the choruses drop, these songs elevate and continue to peak. There has been tons of Kanye stuff in the past months whether its ‘808 and Heartbreaks’ or producing some Cudi songs but know, hands down, no Question, this is his best piece of work lately. Big ups to Fay.
If you were to check out just one of Chiddy Bang’s tracks, it better be “Because.” CB have that indie rapper, Kid Cudi, sound and they demonstrate it by sampling Radiohead’s “Reckoner,” so awesomely that even I, not a die hard Radiohead fan gain has a new love for the band. It really doesn’t get any better than that. Blending a raw hip hop sound, electro, and indie music, they really seem unstoppable. Thanks Shnoody for recommending these cats to me.
Ever heard of a band called The Servant? Unless you`re from France, there`s a good chance the answer is no. I stumbled across their former frontman and creative force, Dan Black, the other day and was pleasantly surprised. This guy has a fucking awesome sound. Alone, the first song sounds a lot like Passion Pit of Sleepyhead fame with some serious bass grooves reminiscent of Flea from RHCP. The other song HYPNTZ, is a Notorious BIG Cover with a crazy Rihanna “Umbrella” instrumental sample layered underneath.
You heard it first. April 3, 2009 the legenday Nas will be performing at Alpha Epsilon Pi aka AEPi at the University of Southern California. Contract signed and paid. For those of you in the LA area, tickets for any local college student will be available within the next few days. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life.
Let me clarify for those of you not quite understanding. FUCKING NAS IN MY BACKYARD. In the ranks of Jay-Z and Biggie and Wayne. Wow.
You all heard about the plane that went down, where by some gift of god Travis Barker and DJ AM made it out alive. While Barker was off from Blink 182, he teamed up with DJ AM, and performed legendary shows together. They made a mixtape called “Fix Your Face”. Travis kills it on the drums playing over DJ AM’s seamless mixing of beats from Biggie to Wayne to the RHCP to Led Zeppelin to Jay Z. I use this instead of Girl Talk as an always baller pregame before the night begins. Below are two of my favorite tracks off of it.

So I went to the Andy Warhol exibit two weeks ago in the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco. Man, did that guy have talent. Anyways, one of the exhibits was displaying Warhol’s influence in music. In addition to being an integral part in Velvet Revolver and designing artwork for the Rolling Stones, Warhol took a liking to music in general, particularly to Rammellzee, during the Studio 54 era. This song is some old school shit and serves as a root to modern day hip hop.
